About McClelland Guild of Artists

Members enjoying the Artisans weekend, Nov 2023

In the 1970s, the founding Trustees of McClelland Gallery introduced the concept of opening community studios in the Gallery grounds.  It was a tentative beginning, but potters, painters, spinners and weavers settled into the available shedding.

In 1982, painters moved into a new studio shared with spinners and weavers.  This period marked a significant expansion in activities, with additional painting classes, workshops and exhibitions.  John Balmain, master painter, influential tutor and mentor to his McClelland students played a crucial role in forming the McClelland Guild of Artist’s founding Committee and enlisting additional tutors.

At this time, membership grew significantly, increasing from 50 to 250 members.

MGoA became an Incorporated Society in 1985.  Supported by Sir William Dargie, five-time Archibald Prize winner and Chairman of McClelland Gallery Board of Trustees; a Ministry for the Arts Grant facilitated the establishment of our present studio.
